Barnyard Millet, 500g
Known in Tamil as Kuthiravally and in Hindi as Samvat ke Chawal, barnyard millet is one of the 7 varieties of millet grown and eaten in India. Compared to refined grains like rice and wheat, millets are nutritionally and ecologically superior. They are starchy grains with a protein content comparable to that of wheat and maize. It also has the lowest carbohydrate content and energy value amongst all the varieties of millets. Since these grains are unprocessed, their nutrient value remains intact, so they are good sources of Bcomplex vitamins. Barnyard millet is also an appropriate food for people intolerant to gluten.
They are also climatefriendly grains because they do well in poor soils with low irrigation and zero chemical inputs.
Millets can either be eaten whole or in the form of flours and ravas. As whole grains, they can be cooked just the way you would cook rice, and lend themselves easily to preparations like biryani, pulao, khichdi and pongal.
This barnyard millet is sourced from the Western Ghats in Dharmapuri district where it is grown without any use of pesticides or fertilizers, making it naturally organic.
