The skin of the banana stem is spun into yarn which is then dyed by hand and woven into these sturdy and colourful dining table essentials. The fibre, which is similar to jute and hemp, is extracted from stems that are the byproduct of banana cultivation and usually burnt as agricultural waste in the orchards surroundings Bangalore after the crop has been harvested.
The fibre is becoming popular in handicraft manufacture because of its strength, biodegradability and environmental compatibility.
Each runner takes 34 days to complete and begins by spinning the banana fibre into yarn on the charkha. This runner is made using ecofriendly dyes.
