The Artisans

This knitted cotton bookmark is handmade by a collective of women living in a small hamlet called Khetikhan in Uttarakhand. Himlayan Blooms was started after the founder, Pratibha Krishnaiah noticed that while these mountain women managed their households as well as farming activities, they did not earn anything for themselves. Seeing their knitting skills, Pratibha worked on training them to make products appealing to urban markets. Presently, the venture gives employment to 85 plus women in 5 odd villages. In the process, they have greatly improved their skill set to achieve the highest quality, while adopting and innovating new designs and patterns. The knitters are adopting new technological skills through the use of the internet to explore new designs. This has improved the morale amongst the women, uplifted their confidence and contributed to their household income.
