The Product
This cacao powder is made in India entirely from organic cacao beans sourced from farmers in Southern India. It has a higher percentage of cacao butter for a lush and well rounded flavour.
While most commercial cacao powders undergo a chemical alkalising process to darken the colour and alter the taste, this is completely natural. The type of chocolate Mason & Co makes requires the highest standard of cacao processing because any 'off flavours' cannot be masked by excess sugar, milk or preservatives.

Partner story
Mason & Co, based in Auroville, was founded by Jane Mason and Fabien Bontems a lawyer and a soundengineer who love the art and science of making and eating chocolate. They started buying small amounts of beans and making chocolate at home, experimenting with the different beans to assess flavour and quality.
It soon became apparent that there were many other deprived lovers of chocolate in India as friends and family started asking for the home made chocolate. Their love for bean tobar, organic chocolate saw the business expand from this home laboratory into an artisan factory. The duo works directly with farmers to change postharvest processing and improve the quality of cacao, the price farmers can sell their cacao and also the taste of the chocolate that you will eat.
Behind the scenes of your Chocolate
Organic: This chocolate uses all local and organic produce which is better for our health, the flavour of food and the environment. The cacao beans are Organic Certified in India, USA & EU. They come from organic farms in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and are free of preservatives and chemicals.
SingleOrigin: Every cacao bean in a bar of chocolate comes from the same region or even the same farm, which is called 'Single Estate'. Using single origin beans ensures purity in flavor dedicated to a specific region.
FarmerFriendly: Every bar of chocolate you buy can be traced back to a specific region or farm. This means that the farmers get to taste and enjoy chocolate made entirely from beans they have grown. Through this process, farmers can develop specific flavours. They are also rewarded through cacao prices for their dedication to quality processing and the development of the best chocolate available in India.
The Artisans
Mason & Co is unique in that it has an allfemale work force who are trained to the highest standards to handcraft these amazing products. Besides, the enterprise works in direct trade with farmers in South India training and developing cacao processing methods. It does not use any broker so that the purchase price of the cacao goes directly to the farmers.
