They are made using a toy making technique called 'turned wood lacquer craft,' which makes use of soft wood and natural dyes derived from seeds, lacquer, roots and leaves. The wood is turned on a lathe to form various shapes and is then applied with lacquers to seal and give a vibrant colour and attractive design. They are made by rural artisans of Etikoppaka region, Andhra Pradesh, with skills that have been passed down from one generation to the other.
