Member of the legume family, chickpeas, popularly known as Garbanzo Beans or Kabuli Chana, are among the oldest consumed foods of the world cultivated and consumed as many as 7,500 years ago in the Middle East.Chickpea is exceptionally high in protein. Chickpea can broadly be classified into two types Desi and Kabuli. The desi type contains smaller and darker seeds and also has a rough coat, whereas, the Kabuli type is usually larger, lighter coloured, and has a smoother coat.
India is the largest producer of chickpeas, supplying around 80 to 90 percent of the worlds production. They are among the riches sources of plant protein and can be used in stews, curries or eaten raw in salads. In India chana is used to make savoury dishes that are eaten as a main course. They are also mixed with taste enhancers and consumed as a light snack.
